Hey Survivor,
Night 4! We’re going to dig deep into my childhood terror for this one. This classic always played in my house in October, except for that year I hid it because it gave me nightmares, and I refused to go through another year of sleeping with the light on. So tonight’s bit of terror is “Tales From The Hood.”

When I was a kid, I was looking through the family junk drawer because I’m nosey, and I came upon this VHS with a skull-wearing sunglasses. My brother popped up and said, “Oh, that’s where it went.” I asked him what it was, and he said it was Tales From The Hood, think Tales From The Crypt but Black. I was intrigued, and then I saw this little demon doll, and I was terrified. Now that I’ve gotten older, I can fully appreciate the epicness of Tales From The Hood; it was really groundbreaking for its time, creating some crazy horror stories for the Black community. There hasn’t been something like Tales From The Hood since but I’ll be ready when the next one shows up or maybe I’ll be the one who writes it, you never know.
Tales From The Hood is a 1995 horror anthology film with four stories and one main story being told to the viewer. We have three drug dealers showing up at Simms' Funeral Home to purchase some drugs from Mr. Simms, the mortuary's eccentric owner. Mr Simms convinces the men to follow him into the funeral home for the drugs, and as they go deeper into the house, he tells them stories about the bodies being stored there and how they ended up dead. There’s a story about a victim of police brutality reaching out from the land of the dead. A young boy dealing with the ultimate bully, a monster living in his house. A former KKK member turned Southern Senator is trapped in a home dealing with the horrors of America’s past that has returned for revenge. A serial killer is put through an experiment to change him into an upstanding citizen, but his past and pain have other pains.
I am a big fan of Tales From The Crypt, so it's a no-brainer that I’m a big fan of Tales From The Hood. The story that creeped me out was the one with the senator coming face to face with souls from the past and this creepy doll. While these stories are entertaining and chilling, they were a look into inner city life and the pain running through the Black community in the 90s (Pain is still running through it, some of it different, most of it the same.) It was great to have a movie that everyone in my family wanted to watch because they saw themselves in it, one way or another. Anyway, you’re going to have a great time with this movie.
Well, that’s it for me, Survivor. We have 9 more nights to go, and I hope you’re ready for the coming terror. As always, stay safe, stay woke, and stay alive!

Your Journey Into Black Horror Doesn’t Need To End With Tales From The Hood. Check out My Best Selling Book Camp Lanier, Based On The Real Life Lake Lanier, A Man Made Lake Where Over 20 People Die Every Year.
Taylor’s heard the rumors about Camp Lanier.
Everyone has.
Urban legends say that an all-Black town was forced out to create the lake, and it has been cursed ever since.
Taylor’s too old to believe in ghost stories.
But if the ghosts aren’t real, why is she the only one who can hear someone crying at night? Why are kids disappearing? And the whispers of a serial killer named the Atlanta Ripper stalking the woods… that can’t be real, can it?
None of it makes sense.
Kids have been “running away” from Camp Lanier for the last 52 years, and Taylor wants to find out why – even if it means swimming to the bottom of the lake and finding out what’s really down there.
